Laura Fraser’s Original 1932
Washington Quarter Plaster Cast.
THE OBVERSE PLASTER USED for TODAY’S Quarter!
Laura Fraser in 1921 became the first
female to design a US coin when she was awarded the Alabama Centennial
Commemorative Half Dollar commission. Laura Fraser was an extremely prolific
and successful sculptor with multiple US Mint/Treasury designs like the Alabama Centennial Half Dollar, the Grant
gold dollar, the Vancouver Half Dollar, the Oregon Trail Half Dollar (along
with her husband), and many, many medals.
However, the 1932 Washington Quarter
submission which was favored, but not accepted, could turn out to be Laura
Fraser’s most famous work thanks to the US Mint. First, in 1999 the US Mint
revived Fraser's original 1932 Quarter submission (this plaster here) and used
this obverse (plaster here) and her reverse for the 1999 George Washington
commemorative $5 gold piece celebrating the 200th. anniversary of Washington's
death. The US mint struck approximately 64,000 commemorative $5 George
Washington gold pieces in mint state and proof format.
Fast forward to 2022, 100 years after
the original 1932 Quarter design submission, the US Mint (finally) began to
numismatically recognize US women in history by selecting 5 different and
amazing women to appear on the Washington Quarter reverse in 2022, 23 and again
in 2024. Laura Fraser's original design submission for the 1932 quarter, the
original obverse plaster submitted by Laura Fraser to the US Mint, offered
here for sale, is paired with and used by the US Mint celebrating this all
female quarter. This plaster is extremely important and it's significance can
not be over or understated. Simply put, this original plaster submitted in 1932
to the US Mint and returned to Fraser is now the front of today's
quarters.
